No Training, No Problem: beForm's Ben Bunting Conquers the Leeds Half Marathon

The nutrition entrepreneur laced up his trainers, skipped the prep, and ran 13.1 miles through the sun-baked streets of Leeds, and he wouldn't change a thing.

From Zero Training to the Finish Line: Ben Bunting's Leeds Half Marathon Story

There's a certain kind of madness that grips ordinary people every spring.

The alarm goes off, the legs protest, and somewhere between the start line and the finish, something shifts.

For Ben Bunting, founder of sports nutrition brand beForm, that moment of madness arrived at the Jane Tomlinson Run For All Half Marathon in Leeds, and he took it on with zero weeks of preparation and 100% family spirit.

Bunting, whose professional life revolves around optimising human performance through nutrition, turned up to the start line having done the one thing no nutrition coach would ever sanction: absolutely no training whatsoever. That said, Ben always has a fuelling strategy up his sleeve from years of running, and experience across varying distances, climates and terrains.

Not a warm-up jog. Not a parkrun. Nothing. Just the company of his cousin and second cousin, and the kind of quiet confidence that only a man who sells endurance supplements for a living can muster.

"It was a family effort," Bunting might well have said, had anyone thought to thrust a microphone in his direction at mile ten. And what a family effort it was.

Hills, Heat, and Heart

If you've never run the Jane Tomlinson Run For All Half Marathon, here's the short version: Leeds does not make it easy.

The course winds through the city with a cruel indifference to your legs, featuring long, grinding stretches of incline that punish the underprepared and test even the well-trained.

For Bunting and his family crew, those climbs were less a challenge to train for and more a wall to walk into and somehow survive.

Add to that a day of unseasonably warm weather, the kind of Leeds sunshine that feels like a personal insult when you're already gasping at mile seven, and you have all the ingredients for a truly humbling afternoon.

The sun beat down without mercy, sapping energy reserves and turning the city's long uphill corridors into something resembling a slow-motion endurance test.

And yet, somehow, it worked.

A Crowd Like No Other

If the hills were the villain of Bunting's story, the crowd was undeniably the hero. The Jane Tomlinson Run For All has long been celebrated as one of the warmest, most community-driven events in the northern running calendar, and this year was no exception.

By Bunting's own reckoning, it was the best crowd support he had ever experienced in a race, a wall of noise, colour and encouragement stretching across the city like a living, breathing energy supplement.

Strangers are cheering your name. Children offering high-fives at the roadside. Locals standing in their front gardens with homemade signs.

There's a particular kind of running fuel that no supplement brand, not even beForm, has yet managed to bottle, and it's the sound of a crowd that genuinely wants you to make it to the finish line.

The Finish Line That Actually Came

Here is the part that deserves proper respect: Ben Bunting, nutrition entrepreneur, zero-week training plan, and heat-addled family man, crossed the finish line in 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Let that land for a second. A sub-two-hour half-marathon, unplanned and unprepared, through one of the hilliest city-centre courses in Yorkshire, in warm conditions, with his family beside him.

It is, by any objective measure, a respectable time for a seasoned runner with months of structured block training behind them.

For a man whose preparation began and ended at the start line, it borders on the extraordinary.

The body, it seems, can remember things the schedule forgot, and a lifetime of understanding nutrition, recovery and human performance has a way of quietly showing up when the miles get hard.

More Than a Race

The Jane Tomlinson Run For All is, of course, about far more than finish times. Named in honour of the late Jane Tomlinson, the remarkable fundraiser and endurance athlete who raised millions for charity while battling terminal cancer, every runner on that course carries something larger than a race number on their chest.

The event is a celebration of community, courage, and the very human desire to push further than feels comfortable.

In that sense, Ben Bunting's run was perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the day. No elaborate preparation. No performance strategy. Just a man, his relatives, and 13.1 miles of Leeds summer, held together by the roar of the best crowd he'd ever seen.

Sometimes, that's more than enough.
